Chapter Six

“We should leave, dad,” David insisted. “That wolf got away and we torched his house. We should get out of the state before he puts the rest of the were’s in the area on alert. They’re going to be looking for a group of men like us and hunt us down.”

Allen and Andrew turned their heads to their father across the campfire, following the conversation eagerly. Jimmy was feeding the vampire chained to an oak in the distance and was not part of their breakfast conversation.

Michael stabbed his sausage and glared at his son. “That house could have easily belonged to the dragon, not just the wolf.”

“Fine, either way we lost our target and we need to go. They both know what we all look like and even heard us using our names.”

David prayed to get some sense into that thick skull of his old man’s. But Michael Shepard was the leader of their little group of killers, and whenever he had a gut feeling about something and decided on it, it was done, regardless of how senseless their plans were.

Michael ate more sausage and stared at his plate, chewed, and then swallowed. “You’re right. I won’t be risking any of my boys on this area in case they went off and are getting every creature in the area ready for war.”

David sighed, grateful that his father was going to listen to him on this one.

Michael continued. “We’ll find a more quiet spot to hunt, hire some men, and then search for another pack farther away from here. Even if the wolves aren’t getting ready for a fight, they’re going to lie low, be harder to catch, and we need a lot of pelts to get us through the winter.”

David nodded, but he still wasn’t feeling so great about all of this. He really wished he could just give up the hunt altogether. He wasn’t about to mention that, however.

“Good thinking, dad.”

Westley leaned against the wooden rail of his cabin porch, staring out at the black sky dotted with diamond stars. The moon was filling up nicely, and his muscles relaxed as he watched it, listening to Annie and Bill howling their song off in the woods to Luna.

They’d asked him to join them. It was a beautiful night, and he’d been tempted to go for a good long howl, but his mind was on so much that he opted to stay behind, listening to them instead of partaking with them. The sky was clear and the air crisp as summer was coming to a close. He hoped that would be enough to allow him to think.

“Want some company?”

Westley jumped and spun. Chris was standing right there, face neutral, but expectant as he awaited Westley’s invitation.

“Jesus, don’t sneak up on me like that.”

Chris apparently took that for his invitation and leaned against the rail in much the same way Westley had been doing. “I shouldn’t have been able to sneak up on you at all,” he mused.

Embarrassed anger had Westley clenching his jaw.
